Exercising outdoors of benefit to older people
08/03/2010Exercising outdoors can help ease the effects of chronic diseases in more mature people, according to experts.
The US-based news provider MSNBC reports that gentle exercise, such as gardening while children are playing on a trampoline, can make a huge difference to the health of older people.
Benefits from exercising outdoors include weight control, improved blood pressure and better muscle tone, which can increase the effect drugs have on the body. Some activities, such as gentle trampoline exercise, can also help improve balance.
Carmel B Dyer, director of the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School, told the news provider: "I have known patients who have started exercising in their 70s and reaped great benefits from it."
Exercising outdoors is also recognised to have benefits for those who suffer with diabetes.
Writing for diabeteshealth.com, Olivia Grider recently said that if children take part in 30 minutes of exercise per day it can cut their risk of developing type-two diabetes.
