Exercising outdoors 'may reduce risk of gallstones'
08/02/2010A new study has found that regularly exercising outdoors or in the gym can cut the risk of developing gallstones.
The research, which was conducted by the University of East Anglia, found that taking part in frequent exercise reduced the risk of developing painful gallstones by 70 per cent.
It is believed that keeping up a regular keep fit routine helps increase the amount of good cholesterol and aids movement through the gut.
However, the study was unable to find the ideal level of physical activity or the precise reason why exercise helps reduce gallstones.
Dr Paul Banim, the study leader, said: "It is difficult to prove a link between lifestyle and disease but we weren't surprised to see these results."
The study, which was published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology, was carried out on 25,000 men and women who took part in different levels of physical exercise.
According to the Daily Express, researchers at the University of Florida recently found that the psychological effects of exercise help people to feel more confident about their body.
