Exercising outdoors 'energises school kids'

23/10/2009
Pupils at one Moreton primary school are starting their day a bit of exercising outdoors in a bid to make them feel fitter and livelier.

Students attending St David's School take part in Wake and Shake sessions before lessons begin with the aim being to energise and relax them - preparing them for the day ahead, reports the Cotswold Journal.

Such initiatives could become increasingly popular in schools, with recent research highlighting that youngsters do not get enough exercise putting pressure on schools to promote the importance of fitness.

The study, by the British Heart Foundation, highlighted that only one in eight (13 per cent) of children get the right amount of exercise, while 30 per cent do less than an hour each week.

It is recommended that school-age children get 60 minutes of daily exercise, which can be obtained through a variety of ways such as team sports, exercising outdoors, fitness classes or outdoor play activities.
