11-year-old trampoline prodigy edges towards championships
24/08/2009 An eleven-year old girl is only a bounce away from competing at the world championships in Russia.
Hannah Nowak has completed three of the four steps required to qualify for the USA Gymnastics World Age Group Team that will compete in St Petersburg later this year, according to her coach, Crissy LaFollette.
Hannah, who's been competing since age four, just completed Lost Creek Elementary and is now in the sixth-grade at Honey Creek Middle School.
The World Age Group Games is the equivalent of the Olympics for power tumbling at Hannah's age and level of competition.
Power tumbling is performed on elevated spring runways that help tumblers propel themselves higher than a basketball goal as they demonstrate speed, strength and skill while executing a series of acrobatic manoeuvres.
Top-level contenders perform explosive somersaults with multiple flips and twists.
This autumn will see the 26th Trampoline World Championships take place in St Petersburg, Russia. The first was held in London in 1964.
