20 minutes of outdoor exercise 'boosts motor skills'
17/05/2010 Just 20 minutes a week of targeted indoor or outdoor exercise can help improve schoolchildren's motor skills, it has been claimed.
A study conducted at the University of Limerick and reported in the Irish Independent highlighted that the motor skills of six to eight-year-olds are slowed down, affecting their ability to balance and their sports agility.
The research team suggested that the best way to tackle this issue could be to hold regular motor skills classes for children of such ages.
"Those who received the classes fared much better, and only one in seven experienced a decrease in motor skills, equal to 4.5 children in a class of 30," commented lead researcher Dr Amanda Connell.
Recent research conducted at the Universities of Leeds and Aberdeen found that children who took part in moderate exercise during the day were able to focus better.
The researchers suggested that children are encouraged to exercise during the day to aid their concentration.
