Autism organisation advocates outdoor play activities
07/04/2010 A leading US autism organisation has signed a new partnership to bring the benefits of outdoor play to children with special educational needs.
Autism Speaks has joined up with Landscape Structures to develop a number of sensory play areas, designed to help kids at different points on the autistic spectrum.
Mark Roithmayr, president of Autism Speaks, explained: "Playgrounds are important places of social interaction and physical and emotional development for children."
It is hoped that the range of outdoor play activities which will be on offer will help to create a more inclusive atmosphere to "encourage parallel and cooperative play".
The organisation was founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright who have an autistic grandchild. It works to increase awareness of the condition, the needs of autistic children and their families, as well as supporting research into finding a cure.
Trampolines are also recognised as an item of outdoor play equipment which can help autistic youngsters. Benefits of jumping on a trampoline include improved balance, coordination and spatial awareness.
