Awards for outdoor play area improvement volunteers
10/06/2010 Awards have been presented to a group of youngsters who gave up their free time to improve an area for outdoor play activities.
The 11 students, who attend a special needs school in Norwich, put in a total of 40 hours volunteer work at the Hewett Nursery, the Norwich Evening News reports.
During their weekly one-hour sessions, the pupils helped paint wooden outdoor play equipment and clear areas which had become overgrown.
The group has now been given the v50 volunteering award for their efforts.
Will Mills, from vinvolved Norfolk, praised the students for the hard work that they put in.
He told the news provider: "The school is already looking for more local projects for students to get involved in so the volunteering is set to continue, which is great news."
Alma Simmonds, manager at the nursery, also offered her gratitude to the group.
A report by the Children's Commissioner and the Scottish Institute for Residential Childcare released earlier this week suggested that there should be opportunities for children to take risks when they participate in outdoor play activities.
