Cherry juice good when exercising outdoors
16/02/2011 An expert in health and fitness has lauded the benefits of drinking cherry juice when exercising outdoors or enjoying outdoor play activities on trampolines for the garden.
Dr Joanna Bowtell, head of sports and exercise science research at London South Bank University, was commenting on recent research, which found that athletes who drank cherry juice reduced muscle damage caused by a tough workout.
The expert explained: "These tart montmorency cherries contain high levels of phytochemicals called anthocyanins that possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties."
She added that the researchers had observed less oxidative damage after exercising outdoors when cherry juice was consumed, which may account for the quicker recovery.
Earlier this month, boxing champion Amir Khan urged parents across Britain to get their children exercising outdoors, perhaps by buying trampolines for the garden.
He said that young people are the "future of sport" and that it is a parent's responsibility to promote the benefits of outdoor play.
