Children 'need more outdoor exercise'
31/03/2010 Children across the globe are desperately in need of more outdoor exercise or they risk turning into couch potatoes, according to a new study.
Research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and detailed in the Journal of Pediatrics found that nearly one-third of children globally spend three hours or more a day in front of the TV or a computer screen, reports Reuters.
A quarter of boys and 15 per cent of girls were deemed to be getting enough exercise.
"Even with the limitations that questionnaire data (suffer) from, I guess it's pretty safe to say that we have a huge problem with physical inactivity among schoolchildren around the globe and that we should take action," said Regina Guthold of the WHO.
Popstar Miley Cyrus recently encouraged kids to get more outdoor exercise, telling the Sun that sites such as Twitter and Facebook "waste your life", adding that youngsters should spend more time playing sports.
