Children 'should be exercising outdoors in snow'
21/12/2010 The head of a leading children's charity has voiced her concerns that there are not enough British youngsters exercising outdoors by playing in the snow.
Catriona Williams, chief executive of Children in Wales, told WalesOnline.co.uk that she was "horrified" that so few children seemed to be feeling the benefits of outdoor play during the current cold snap.
She said that freezing conditions, while a nuisance to commuters and those with mobility problems, give children the perfect opportunity to get some fresh air and spend more time exercising outdoors.
"I know that it is treacherous and difficult for frail and elderly people in these conditions but I think it helps children's life experiences and is a good opportunity for some exercise and enjoyment," added Ms Williams.
The expert went on to suggest that many children nowadays choose modern technology, such as games consoles, over old-fashioned outdoor play activities in the snow.
