Children design area for outdoor play activities
26/05/2010 A new area for outdoor play activities designed by children, for children has opened in Northampton.
Based on suggestions made by the Kingsthorpe Youth Forum, the space includes a trampoline, pendulum swing, tunnel slide and net climbing frames, the Northampton Chronicle reports.
Kingsthorpe Neighbourhood Management Board had the final decision on what items of outdoor play equipment to use in the new area, which is located between Harborough Road and Welford Road.
Parenting expert and author Polly Beard recently suggested that spending time exercising outdoors was a great activity for parents and children to do together.
The cash to create the outdoor play space was provided largely from the government's Playbuilder scheme, with additional funding being provided by Northamptonshire Police, Kingsthorpe Manor Trust and local councillors.
Brian Hoare, leader of Northampton Borough Council, told the news provider: "I think you can tell from the reaction of the children using the new equipment that it is going to be really popular.
He added: "This type of play equipment is really challenging and exciting."
