Exercise myths busted: Do you know the most effective way to lose weight?
31/12/2009 Some of the most popular exercise myths have been busted by a top sports scientist including the idea that you need to slave away in the gym to lose weight.
In an article in the Sun, Martin McDonald said that "short, sharp bursts of very intense exercise" were often the best way to lose a few extra founds and keep fit. He added that despite the increase in fad diets and weight loss regimes, good old fashioned exercise was still the most effective way of staying trim.
The myth that jogging, cycling, swimming and aerobics were the best forms of exercise was also busted. Mr McDonald said: "This kind of "steady state" exercise won't shift fat fast. That's why you see people in the gym plodding away on the treadmill and not losing much weight."
His comments echo those made recently by a sports development expert from Essex. Mr Ferrari said that exercising on a trampoline is 68 per cent more effective than running and "out performs swimming as an all round exercise".
Other myths that were disproved included the idea that no-carb diets are the best way to lose weight and doing sit ups guarantees you a flat stomach.
