Exercise outside 'to keep fit this winter'
19/11/2009 Those looking to stay fit this winter are being encouraged to exercise outdoors despite the cold weather.
According to Dr James Daniels, a professor of family and community medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, people should not harbours any fears of catching hypothermia or pneumonia.
He told BeHealthySpringfield.com: "We definitely encourage people to exercise five days a week for about 20 minutes to stay in shape. No matter what the season, people should definitely find ways to get outside."
Dr Daniels added that warming up by jogging on the spot or walking, and cooling down with a long stretch will help people exercising outside in cold weather to avoid injuries. Another option is to use a outdoor trampoline.
Last week, studies carried out by researchers at Chicago's Alzheimer's Disease Centre found that outdoor exercise may help older people to avoid the onset of dementia.
The study identified a link between maintaining muscle strength and preventing cognitive impairment.
