Exercising outdoors 'could help combat diabetes'
09/02/2010 Exercising outdoors can help reduce your risk of developing diabetes even if you're overweight, according to one expert.
Dr Anna Clarke, health promotion and research manager with the Diabetes Federation of Ireland, told the Irish Times that maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and giving up smoking are three key ingredients in the fight against diabetes.
"You can be healthy and overweight if you are exercising a lot it improves insulin response and in a fitter person their heart is pumping better and thats clearing the sludge out of their blood vessels," she explained to the newspaper.
She added: "You may be able to bring your blood sugar levels back to normal through diet and exercise."
Studies have also shown that regularly exercising outdoors has psychological effects as well as physical benefits.
The Daily Express reported recently that researchers at the University of Florida found that regular exercise helps people to feel more confident about their body, even if they are not actually physically getting much fitter.
