Exercising outdoors 'good for beating depression'
24/01/2011 Those currently - or with a history of - suffering depression should look to exercising outdoors, perhaps with trampolines for the garden, as a way to relieve their symptoms.
According to Jenny Armitage, of Journey Toward Recovery, there have been several studies which have shown active lifestyles and outdoor play activities to help people with depression.
"It depends what the person feels ready to do … Going out for a walk, walking the dog or going running can help," she explained, though trampolines for the garden may suit those with an appetite for something more energetic.
The expert's comments follow research published last month in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, which found that certain therapies could be more effective in beating depression than prescribed medication.
As well as using their garden trampolines for exercising outdoors, Ms Armitage advised sufferers of depression to talk about their thoughts and feelings with people they trust.
