Exercising outdoors 'improves mental health'
22/03/2010 While the effects of using a trampoline on physical health are well documented, one expert has said that the practice could improve people's mental wellbeing.
The About Depression blog claimed that exercising raises the number of neurotransmitters which are used by the brain, which can relieve anxiety, give people more energy and help improve sleeping patterns.
It was said that regular exercise has a positive effect on serotonin and dopamine and can reduce the risk of becoming obese or gaining a build up of damaging cholesterol.
"Regular physical functioning improves the attitude further reduces the risk of developing depression. These chemicals are used by the brain cells to transmit information so that they affect your thinking and mood," the blog advised.
Suite 101 recently explained that outdoor play activities help children to develop important motor skills, claiming that outdoor play activities are "essential for child development" and play areas should be seen as "an extension of the classroom".
