Exercising outdoors 'is not just about losing weight'
30/10/2009 Exercising outdoors is not just about trying to lose weight, it is about overall wellbeing, according to one fitness fanatic.
After receiving criticism from friends for going to the gym as she "was already too skinny" Shella Erskine-Frimpong protested that she was doing so to stay healthy.
Although dispiriting, the comments showed ignorance and limited knowledge about physical exercises, she told Peace FM online.
The author said that there are many misconceptions surrounding exercise such as it is only for those who want to lose weight, or that exercise is for athletes or sports people, or is a medical recommendation for those who are at some health risk.
Ms Erskine-Frimpong said that physical exercises help a person to feel better physically and mentally while lowering blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol in the body.
Exercising outdoors, according to the author, reduces the risk of heart disease and a stroke while strengthening the heart muscles and keeping the joints flexible.
Research by the American Institute for Cancer Research uncovered that exercise, along with healthy eating and keeping weight under control, could help prevent nearly 40 per cent of breast cancer cases in the US.
