Funding for outdoor play activities scheme runs out
26/03/2010 Children in the Gloucestershire region will no longer get to feel the benefits of outdoor play activities as funding for a free scheme has run out.
The Play Ranger programme in Dursley, Cam and Berkeley was set up with cash from the Big Lottery Fund, the Gazette reports.
It has been running for two years but will come to and end in four weeks time as Stroud District Council said it will not have enough money to keep funding the scheme from its own budget.
Pip Levett, director of play at Play Gloucestershire, told the newspaper that her organisation was going to continue to seek funding as outdoor play activities are important to the local community.
"We are the antidote to the passive inside world; we get wet, we get dirty, we have fun. It really is an excellent scheme," she added.
New figures from Play England show that people are increasingly switching on to the importance and benefits of outdoor play activities.
A survey found that 83 per cent of parents believe the government should implement policies to encourage outdoor play activities.
