Funds raised for new outdoor play equipment
24/05/2010 Over £1,000 was raised for the provision of outdoor play equipment from a charity abseil this weekend.
Supporters of Wellesley Park in Wellington abseiled down the Debenhams store in the town, raising a total of £1,380 to help pupils enjoy the benefits of outdoor play activities, This is the West Country reports.
Some 26 people braved the abseil, including teachers, parents and friends, who all raised a minimum of £30 each.
Alice Cribbon, chair of the parent teacher association, thanked all those who took part.
She told the news provider: "We really appreciate all the money raised and I would especially like to congratulate those people who faced their fears to complete the challenge."
Outdoor play activities are known to have numerous benefits for children.
Darell Hammond, chief executive officer of US not-for-profit play organisation KaBOOM, explained last week that playing outdoors is important for both children and communities.
He described outdoor play activities as being "a long-term, preventative measure for obesity".
