Garden trampoline exercise 'requires balance'
23/02/2011 Families choosing to buy trampolines for the garden online have been urged to ensure they approach exercising outdoors with the right balance, to avoid sports injuries and soreness and enjoy the benefits of outdoor play pain-free.
Dr Joanna Bowtell, head of sports and exercise science research at London South Bank University, said that whenever people start a new fitness activity, there is a "good chance" that they will encounter muscle soreness.
However, she added: "It's not all bad news though as this is part of the adaptation process in the muscle and shows that the training is working."
But the expert recommended gradual adoption of new outdoor play activities, such as using trampolines for the garden, to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of exercising outdoors without unnecessary discomfort.
"It's important to get the balance right as too much muscle damage may put you off exercising and will limit your ability to train," Dr Bowtell added.
Her comments follow a study by researchers at London South Bank University, which found that athletes who drink cherry juice reduced muscle damage caused by a tough workout.
