Garden trampolines: Parents urged to get kids fit
03/02/2011 Britain's mums and dads may be encouraged to spend money on outdoor play activities for their children, such as trampolines for the garden, after one expert highlighted a shocking obesity statistic.
Writing for the Daily Mirror, Sally Janes noted the latest government estimate that one in three primary school pupils are currently overweight, making the benefits of outdoor play more important than ever.
Ms Janes suggested a number of ways in which children can have fun while exercising, whether it be indoors on a Nintendo Wii games console, walking the dog or bouncing on trampolines for the garden.
"Getting into your swimming costume is probably the last thing you feel like doing in the middle of winter, but it is great exercise. Swim with the kids and you could be burning 300 calories in half an hour – that's ten calories a minute," she added.
Last month, writing for the Sun Herald, Merrie Leininger claimed that outdoor play games on a garden trampoline can help families burn up to 1,000 calories every 60 minutes.
