Garden trampolines 'help children beat the sniffles'
02/11/2010 The best way to stop children catching a cold is to promote regular exercise, according to new research, which may encourage parents to buy trampolines for the garden.
According to the study, published this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, exercising outdoors at least five days a week could reduce children's chances of catching a cold by almost half.
The authors of the report noted that regular bouts of exercise, such as bouncing on garden trampolines, trigger temporary rises in immune system cells circulating around the body.
While levels typically fall back to normal within hours, each session exercising outdoors "may improve immuno-surveillance against pathogens that reduce overall upper respiratory tract infection incidence and symptomatology," they concluded.
The investigation also supported earlier findings that encouraging children to eat plenty of fruit could also reduce the frequency of viral infections, such as the common cold.
Earlier this week, garden design experts Floral and Hardy suggested that most garden trampolines do not require an excessively-large outdoor space.
