Getting kids to exercise outdoors and play sports is 'a challenge'
14/07/2010 Encouraging children of a certain age to get up and spend time exercising outdoors is a challenge, but a new promotion could change that, according to one former Olympian.
Matthew Pinsent, who has won four rowing gold medals, said that the new Get Set, Go Free campaign from Nestle is offering families the chance to try their hand at a range of new sports and outdoor play activities.
More than 4,000 venues across the country are participating in the scheme, which offers both traditional sports and more adventurous activities.
Mr Pinsent said that the aim of the campaign is to get "people involved in sport and an active lifestyle".
"It's always a bit of a challenge with children of a certain age and demographic that actually they might prefer to stay inside doing nothing [rather than] going outside, because they [think], 'Oh, well I've tried that, I've done that, we do that at school'," he added.
Taking part in sport or outdoor play activities was also said to be a great family pastime.
