Government 'should support outdoor play activities'
23/03/2010 Over three-quarters of parents believe that outdoor play activities are so important they should become a government issue, according to new figures.
The results of a poll conducted by Play England show that 83 per cent of Brits with children want the next parliament to have policies which encourage kids to take part in outdoor play activities.
Play England is calling on the authorities to enforce a 20 mph speed limit in residential areas, encourage schools to make outdoor play activities part of their timetable and provide opportunities for children to play after school.
Adrian Voce, director of the organisation, said: "Communities where children can play in freedom and safety are happy, healthy communities."
He added that the "barriers which have been erected' are creating 'growing consequences for children's health and development".
A report commissioned earlier this year by Play England found that
supervised outdoor play areas help stop children committing crimes and engaging in anti-social behaviour.
