High impact exercise increases arthritis risk.
30/11/2009 High impact exercises add to the risk of people developing arthritis when they're middle aged, according to new research.
Researchers from the University of California, in San Diego, carried out their study on more than 200 people between the ages of 45 and 55 with a normal weight.
The study found that those who regularly took part in high impact exercises, such as running, were more likely to suffer from arthritis. The damage to their knees was solely related to the type and amount of exercise they were doing, rather than their age or gender.
Exercise on a trampoline is extremely low impact and good on joints as the trampoline absorbs 80 per cent of the force of the jump. However it still provides good cardio vascular exercise while improving muscle tone, co ordination and balance.
A spokeswoman for the Arthritis Research Campaign said: "We have known for years that certain high impact sports and jobs are associated with an increased risk of osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee, but for the vast majority of people exercise is good, not only for the cartilage but for total body health."
