Junior Olympics expects record numbers on the trampoline
28/07/2009 At this Thursday's (July 30th) Amateur Athletics Union Olympic games, record numbers of participants are expected to take part in trampoline events.
The popularity of trampolines, especially among females, has led organisers to cancel the female basketball event due to lack of interest, reports the Des Moines Register.
Nineteen official sports are due to take place at the games, with all but field hockey due to take place in Iowa.
Around 11,800 athletes are expected to compete in Iowa, with around 1,100 expected at tumbling and trampoline events.
Since 2000, the number of Junior Olympics participants has ranged between 11,154 (2004, in Des Moines) to 14,043 (2005, in New Orleans).
The event began yesterday (July 27th) and will run until August 8th.
Last week, in the UK, James Higgins and Katherine Driscoll triumphed in the senior categories at the 2009 British Trampoline Championships at the NIA in Birmingham.
