Kids 'should be encouraged to play outside'
09/07/2009 Parents should encourage their children to play outside, one fitness consultant has claimed.
Speaking to the Star Gazette, MARS Fitness Services owner Lee Welles said allowing children to spend long stretches of time outdoors is good for their health and wellbeing.
Time in the outdoors is important for physical and mental health at all ages, she commented, especially when it allows them to explore and engage with nature in the back garden or elsewhere.
Ms Welles added: "Unstructured outdoor play has become an endangered species. Many families have substituted genuine curiosity and exploration for organised sports and events. This is cause for concern.
"Let your kids play outside this summer. Don't invade their world unless invited. Most of us remember running and playing outdoors, and the joys and dramas that come with it. Pass it along to the kids."
Last month, Keith Barrett told EzineArticles that garden trampolines are a fun way of exercising.
