Lack of outdoor play 'contributes to childhood obesity'
07/12/2009 Too much TV and not enough outdoor play activities are two of the biggest factors contributing to childhood obesity, according to the Huffington Post.
In an article for the online newspaper, Joanna Dolgoff MD cited case studies from the US which reveal that the more hours of TV a child watches, the more likely they are to be overweight.
"Before these inventions became so popular, children used to run outside to play. Now, more often than not, our kids are content to sit on the couch with the remote (and a bag of chips)," she explained.
Dr Dolgoff says that children who are heavier often experience problems with their knees and ankles when they're running.
Trampolines are an ideal piece of weight loss equipment for children as they provide hours of fun, as well as helping kids lose weight.
The exercise is extremely low-impact as the trampoline absorbs 80 per cent of the energy from the bounce. This makes it a great form of exercise for children who are overweight as it places little strain on joints.
