Lack of outdoor play activities 'causes poor development'
07/06/2010 There are both physical and emotional benefits to children taking part in outdoor activities, according to the US National Wildlife Federation (NWF).
Much like in the UK, statistics show that children in the US are spending too much time in front of the TV and not enough time in the great outdoors.
David Mizejewski, a naturalist with the NWF, said that its often easier for busy parents to let their children sit in front of the TV or computer screen, but it is not good for their development.
A lack of outdoor play activities can have an effect on a child's ability to see over longer distances and can contribute to obesity.
Mr Mizejewski said that parents should make the effort to spend an hour in the evening with their children.
"You don't have to be an early childhood educator or a naturalist to be able to give your kids these important nature activities," he explained.
The Shreaveport Times reported recently that children who do not take part in enough outdoor play activities often feel increased levels of stress.
