Miley Cyrus encourages exercise among kids
22/03/2010 US pop singer Miley Cyrus has told children that exercising outdoors would be more beneficial than spending too much time on the internet.
The 17-year-old Hannah Montana star spoke to the Sun to say that sites such as Twitter and Facebook "waste your life", adding: "I'm telling kids 'Don't go on the internet. You should be outside playing sports'."
Leading psychotherapist Steve Pope, who has been researching the effect of the internet on the brain, agreed with the youngster, claiming that children could find themselves addicted to the computer if they do not do more exercise.
He extolled the benefits outdoor play, saying: "With Twitter and Facebook, yes, you are communicating, but there is no physical interaction, no intimacy and no outdoor activity and exercise - vital for a child's healthy development."
Amy Schofield, editor of education and parenting website mychild.co.uk, recently said that children growing up in the UK are "much more restricted" than in the past, as few parents feel safe letting their children play in the street.
