New opportunities for outdoor play activities in Solihull
20/01/2010 Children in Solihull will soon have more chances to benefit from outdoor play activities as a million pound scheme nears completion, reports the Birmingham Mail.
As part of the Playbuilder initiative, 25 play centres in the area have received a makeover in a bid to create safe environments for outdoor play. The newspaper reports that the areas have been designed to provide challenges for children and encourage them to take risks within a controlled environment.
Council leader Ken Messon said: "Being able to play safely and independently is an important part of growing up."
Benefits associated with outdoor play include increased levels of fitness, which reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Many people believe that outdoor play activities also help stimulate a child's social and emotional development.
Improvements which were made include new skating facilities at Tudor Grange Park, a new BMX track at Elmdon Health Park and a range of improved equipment at Dorridge Park Play area, including a trampoline.
