New trampolines used as learning aid for special needs pupils
15/12/2009 Children at a school near Peterborough will be benefitting from new equipment, including trampolines, reports the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
Wittering Primary School unveiled its new facilities this week , which are intended to improve movement and thinking skills of pupils with special educational needs (SEN).
The newspaper reports that there are a number of new facilities in the courtyard area, including tyre swings, trampolines and spinning boards.
Some experts believe that children with autism could benefit from using a trampoline. It is thought that the increased awareness of their own body can help with issues such as poor balance.
According to Autism Training Tools, trampolines can be used as a counting device, to increase skills in imitation or help children remember a sequence of actions.
Charlotte Blake, deputy-head teacher and SEN co-ordinator told the newspaper: "The sensory room and courtyard have enabled us to support our pupils to a level which most schools are unable to."
Staff at the school have also all received training in how to use the equipment properly.
