Northumberland children 'to feel benefits of outdoor play'
11/11/2010 Youngsters in Northumberland will soon be enjoying the benefits of outdoor play, as a number of projects have received funding in the county.
According to the Berwick Advertiser, funding for the outdoor play activities had been in doubt because investment from the Department for Education was put on hold earlier this year.
However, the proposals have now been given the go-ahead, with Lowick play park receiving £24,132, Horncliffe playground getting £27,236 and Newfields village green benefitting from £42,500 worth of new outdoor play equipment.
"This scheme has been very successful in the past and provides many benefits to our children and young people, including exercise, enjoyment, the development of social skills and confidence," Jeff Reid, leader of Northumberland County Council, told the newspaper.
He went on to say that local communities had been "desperately disappointed" when funding appeared to be under threat.
Mr Reid added, however, that with a major investment now firmly in place, children in the area would soon be enjoying the benefits of outdoor play in a safe environment.
