Obese choose surgery over exercising outdoors
25/02/2011 Overweight Brits are increasingly going under the knife to overcome obesity, according to new research, while exercising outdoors on garden trampolines could be a healthier solution.
Figures published by the NHS Information Centre suggest that hospital admissions for surgical treatments related to excessive weight rose by 30 per cent last year, topping 10,000 for the first time ever.
While it may not be as quick a solution, overweight families may find that more time spent exercising outdoors, perhaps with trampolines for the garden, is a safer and healthier way to lose the weight.
The statistics appeared to contain one tiny glimmer of hope, in that the proportion of the UK population that is obese seems to be falling.
However, Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum, told the Independent: "Although obesity may be levelling off, that pertains only to a better-off section of the population. The obese are getting heavier – exponentially so."
Families may therefore be well advised to look at increasing their use of outdoor play activities, with garden trampolines just one way for both adults and children to burn calories and have fun at the same time.
