Outdoor play 'vital for youngsters'
13/08/2009 A councillor has been keen to outline the benefits of outdoor play after his council announced it is to spend £1 million on improving local parks.
Councillor Dave Butt, Torbay Council's cabinet member for community services, told Southdevon.co.uk: "Play is vital to a healthy and happy childhood, so we are creating quality outdoor play areas throughout the Bay."
Youngsters in the area are being asked about how the council should spend the money, with the aim of providing local children with safe and exciting facilities to help their physical, social and educational development.
The Playbuilder programme will run over two years and will see £1,125,459 awarded by the Department of Children Schools and Families spent on improvements to play spaces in Torbay.
Torbay Council has already given the go-ahead for the first 11 parks to be improved over the next 12 months.
The second round of parks will be announced in the autumn after further assessments and work will start on site in most parks in September and October to avoid the busy holiday season.
Last week, Torbay Council announced the reopening of the popular attraction of the go kart facilities in Goodrington.
