Outdoor play activities 'can help boys achieve at school'
02/03/2010 Outdoor play activities could help boys reach higher levels of academic achievement, according to one expert.
The Guardian reports that Sue Palmer, who is a writer, broadcaster and consultant, advocates outdoor play as a way of helping boys to keep still. She believes that outdoor play activities can aid the development of social skills and physical coordination.
Ms Palmer said that boys often end up underachieving in the classroom because the current education system doesn't address their needs properly.
"Stories and song, music, outdoor play, being physically active and exploratory: that's what you see in the successful kindergartens of the world," she explained to the newspaper.
The view echoes that of Parentline Plus which believes that outdoor play activities are important for child development.
According to the organisation, "spending time with children shows them they are important and loved".
In addition, the benefits of outdoor play activities include increased confidence and self esteem, improved problem-solving skills and the opportunity to build relationships.
