Outdoor play activities 'have close link to physical activity levels'
13/08/2010 Outdoor play activities are important due to their close link to levels of physical activity, one expert has claimed.
Ken Ryan, senior communications officer at Play England, said that play is important both for children's wellbeing and their physical health.
"The chief medical officer states that having access to good play provision is good for children's health – it keeps them active," he explained.
A recent survey by Play England discovered that 47 per cent of parents believe it is unsafe for children to take part in outdoor play activities without adult supervision and 37 per cent believe they will be judged by their neighbours if their kids do so.
Mr Ryan said it is important that children are able to "confidently" use the facilities for outdoor play activities in their local area.
He added: "The independent mobility of children has been restricted."
The survey also found that almost three quarters of children would like the opportunity to spend more time taking part in outdoor play activities in the area where they live.
