Outdoor play activities 'help kids appreciate nature'
08/02/2010 Outdoor play activities should be encouraged by parents as they help children understand the natural world, according to one blog.
The Sentuhan Bayu blog, which offers advice on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle, named getting kids involved in outdoor play activities as one of ten easy ways to be an eco-friendly parent on a budget.
"Outdoor play should be encouraged as it develops appreciation for nature and a healthy, active physical body," the blog explained.
A natural approach to keeping children healthy was recommended. The blog said: "Don't try to create a sterile environment let kids get dirty and develop their immune systems."
Parents were advised to purchase wooden toys for their children, which can range from puzzles designed for toddlers to playhouses.
Fran Mainella, the first woman to ever serve as the US director of national parks, said recently that a lack of outdoor play activities was beginning to affect the physical and mental health of children, according to the Daily Reflector.
