Outdoor play activities in Gloucester to be boosted
31/03/2010 Outdoor play activities in Gloucester are set to get a boost thanks to £500,000 in funding.
The cash will be spent improving 17 of the city's 27 playgrounds and parks, with a particular focus on providing facilities for older children and teenagers.
Some of the new play areas should be completed by the end of April, including those at Milton Avenue in Podsmead, Meadowleaze in Elmbridge and Clock Tower Park, Abbeymead.
The rest of the work will be conducted over a two-year period.
Martin Shields, director for services and neighbourhoods, said: "Residents often tell us they want a greater provision for children and young people and to see investment in the citys parks and open spaces and this is what we are doing."
The council is planning to consult with local residents and youngsters to see what they want including in the plans.
Research published earlier this month by Play England highlighted that over three-quarters (83 per cent) of UK adults think the next government should launch policies which ensure children can spend more time taking part in outdoor play activities.
