Outdoor play activities recommended by family health organisation
08/01/2010 Encouraging children to take part in outdoor play activities has been named as a top tip for parents looking to improve their children's fitness.
MEND, an organisation which aims to promote "fitter, healthier and happier" families, recommends taking the time every week to organise an outdoor play activity for the whole family.
It also advises trying to get your children to play outdoors during the weekend and after school "as often as possible".
Government recommendations are for children to take part in 60 minutes of physical exercise every day. However, the British Heart Foundation found that just 11 per cent of children actually do this.
A lack of outdoor play activities has been named as a contributing factor in the increasing level of childhood obesity and the decreasing level of fitness which is being experienced by UK children.
MEND also believes that the cold weather shouldn't stop you from taking part in some of your favourite exercise activities. It recommends setting up a room in the house where children can play with their outdoor play equipment safely.
