Outdoor play activities used to combat childhood obesity
18/12/2009 Children in Corby will soon have more outdoor play activities on offer as part of the town's plan to combat childhood obesity, reports the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph.
The newspaper reports that a new outdoor play area will be opened in the Kingswood area of the town, thanks to a £3,000 cash boost.
It is hoped that the new facilities with encourage children in the local area of all ages and abilities to play outdoors and get fit while having fun.
Councillor John McGhee contributed funding from his Empowering Councillors fund. He told the newspaper: "Given all we read about childhood obesity, having something where people walk past every day will help them have fun and get themselves fit."
He added that the project would "benefit the entire community".
It is thought that the new equipment could include brightly coloured treadmills, cross trainers and weights.
Organising outdoor play activities is just one way that parents can contribute to their children getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. NHS figures released earlier in the month show that one in four boys and one in five girls are obese or overweight when they start at school.
