Outdoor play games 'vital for children'
15/11/2010 Parents have been urged to get their kids exercising outdoors, perhaps with trampolines for the garden, after a survey revealed the extent to which youngsters ditch fresh air in favour of video games.
According to a study commissioned by the TV channel Nickelodeon, only 25 per cent of children take part in outdoor play on a daily basis, while 39 per cent do not exercise outdoors at all.
Nina Elavia Jaipuria, senior vice-president and general manager for Nickelodeon India, said that the results had left her dumbstruck.
"It has been an eye-opener and has thrown up some startling insights. Outdoor play is clearly deprioritised in a kid's life today. It is a wake-up call for children, parents and schools too," she asserted.
One way in which concerned parents could get their inactive children exercising outdoors would be to invest in trampolines for the garden.
Earlier this month, a writer on EditorsChoose suggested that trampoline fitness can easily be incorporated into a child's daily routine, as it is fun and feels less like a workout than other forms of exercise.
