Outdoor play produces healthier kids in Liverpool
01/12/2009 Youngsters in Liverpool have been given prizes at the city's Active Oscars for taking part in sports and outdoor play activities.
Organisations in Liverpool have been eager to reduce the rising levels of childhood obesity in the city. They developed a number of initiatives to encourage children to become more healthy and spend more time out of doors.
Stephen Tiffany, head of the Liverpool healthy schools team, said: "It's also very important that all children, irrespective of ability, are encouraged to take part in sport and physical activity, so that they can reach their full potential."
The Liverpool Echo also reports that seven schools in the city were awarded National Healthy Schools status from the government.
After the ceremony, 300 more young sports stars received medals for representing their school or city in national events.
Recent figures released by the British Heart Foundation revealed that just 11 per cent of children take part in the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day. However 70 per cent of parents believe that their kids are doing enough exercise.
Trampolines are an ideal form of exercise equipment for kids as it provides a whole body workout, while still being a fun and sociable activity.
