Parents 'choosing trampolines over games consoles'
10/11/2009 Nostalgic parents looking to get their youngsters away from computers and into exercising outdoors are buying presents to reflect that.
In Australia, the outdoor toy category - which includes sandpits, scooters and trampolines - has grown 15 per cent this year, ahead of toy cars, action figures and junior electronics, reports the Daily Telegraph in Australia.
Research by Toys 'R' Us has also found that classic children's games like marbles and jacks have driven a ten per cent increase in the value of games and puzzles sold.
Toys 'R' Us merchandise manager Peter Arena said adults are looking through rose-tinted glasses at their own childhood to remember what they enjoyed as youngsters.
"There is a need to try to get kids away from just staying indoors and actually get them back to a bit of old fashioned values," he told the news provider.
He added that the demand for trampolines "was on fire", with around 120,000 being sold nationwide.
According to Tesco Direct, sales of trampolines increased by 355 per cent in the UK in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2008, reports the Associated Press.
