Parents have 'forgotten how to take part in outdoor play activities'
27/08/2010 Outdoor play activities could be the ideal pastime for families this bank holiday, as a new survey shows that more than a fifth of parents have "forgotten" how to play with their kids.
Research conducted by Disneyland Paris revealed that 21 per cent of parents no longer know how to play with their children, due to a lack of inspiration and a shortage of time.
Half of those who responded to the survey said that work and household tasks prevent them from spending much time with their kids, while 55 per cent of children said they would like more family time.
Some 2,000 parents and 2,000 children took part in survey for the State of Play, Back to Basics report, which was compiled by Professor Tanya Byron.
Professor Byron said: "There are four key ingredients to a successful playtime between parents and children namely: education, inspiration, integration and communication.
"Parents need to take a step back and think back to how their own childhood games used these four pillars and how they can implement them now."
Amy Schofield, editor of education and parenting website mychild.co.uk, recently explained that outdoor play activities also help to enhance social skills because they allow children to interact with each other.
