People in the East Midlands should get exercising outdoors
15/02/2010 People living the East Midlands are among the most in need of some outdoor exercise, with new research showing they have the highest average body mass index (BMI) in the country.
Residents of the region have an average BMI of 28.9, compared to people in London who have the lowest average BMI of 26.1.
The survey, which was conducted by YouGov and Slimming World, highlighted that as a nation the UK is overweight with an average BMI of between 25 and 29.9.
Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World's head of nutrition and research, said: "Clearly obesity is a national problem but the causes are often closer to home and most of us recognise that our lifestyle and the environment we live in is at least, partly to blame."
She added that obesity affects how people feel, their happiness levels and their outlook on life.
One quick and easy way to get some regular exercise is to use a mini trampoline which enable people to get fit in the comfort of their own home.
Some experts say that rebounding on a trampoline, which helps improve muscle tone and coordination, is more effective than jogging.
