People with learning disabilities 'can exercise outdoors'
07/06/2010 The benefits of exercising outdoors for people with learning disabilities were highlighted in a special charity event this weekend.
Mencap and the Special Olympics Great Britain held the Serious About Sport event on Sunday June 6th at Battersea Park.
A number of sports were on offer at the annual event, including running, basketball, judo, tag rugby and football.
Those with profound and multiple learning disabilities were also able to get involved with exercising outdoors thanks to specially adapted equipment.
Amanda Henman, from Mencap, said: "This event is about trying new things and enjoying a fun day with the family. It's amazing how many people go away with a new-found passion for a sport they tried for the first time."
An area with arts and crafts and refreshments was also provided for other members of the family.
The importance of families taking part in sport and exercising outdoors was highlight recently by Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis.
Ms Lewis said that the rising levels of childhood obesity mean that families must understand that they need to be more active.
