Pregnant women 'should take low-impact exercise'
20/10/2009 Women who are pregnant should replace running with a lower-impact exercise such as bouncing on a trampoline.
Dr Nicholas Peirce, the England and Wales Cricket Board's chief medical officer, made the recommendation following a question posed by a reader in the Observer.
When asked about how far into pregnancy women could exercise without putting themselves or unborn child at risk, Mr Peirce said that women who want to remain fit should change their exercise.
The expert said that women should exercise during pregnancy but should try to avoid high-intensity or prolonged workouts.
He said: "Consider switching to lower-impact exercise such as power walking, static cycling, cross-training, low-impact aerobics and swimming."
