Primary school explores the benefits of outdoor play
22/01/2010 A school near Londonderry is applying the benefits of outdoor play to the classroom with the opening of a new outside learning space, according to local reports.
Pupils at Callow End Primary school will soon be able to take advantage of their new outdoor classroom, which has been covered in snow for the past few weeks. It is hoped that the outdoor learning environment will be beneficial to the children's education.
Sarah Beard, the Foundation Stage class teacher, told the Malvern Gazette:"The area outside the classroom has been completely redeveloped. We designed it ourselves and its just a fantastic place for the children to play and learn."
Facilities in the area include a play house, sand pit, green house and outdoor stage.
Studies have shown that children can benefit significantly from outdoor play. It is thought that as well as improved physical fitness, children develop socially and emotionally by taking risks in a safe environment.
