Protect kids from the sun during outdoor play activities
06/04/2010 As the great British summer approaches parents are being warned that they must ensure children are properly protected when taking part in outdoor play activities.
Bevis Man, communications and press officer for the British Skin Foundation, said that UK still has "a long way to go" in terms of understanding and taking action when it comes to the dangers of the sun.
"Regardless of whether you're in the UK or travelling abroad for summer, there is no substitute for the combination of loose clothing, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and shade in addition to wearing appropriately strong sunscreen," he explained.
Mr Nevis added that as soon as skin starts to look tanned it has become damaged.
However, parents should also be aware that one of the many benefits of outdoor play activities is exposure to Vitamin D, which is received through the sun's rays and can help combat disorders such as rickets.
Dr Simon Rabinowitz, chief of paediatrics at Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, recently told silive.com that this, combined with the fitness benefits of outdoor play activities, means that schools should encourage children to spend time outside.
